Statesman and founder Benjamin Franklin once called taxes one thing in life that is certain. For a week this month though, shoppers in Maryland will be free from that pecuniary addition to certain purchases.
When is Maryland Tax-Free Week for 2024?
The state’s chief fiscal officer, Comptroller Brooke Lierman, announced Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week as Sunday, Aug.
11 through Saturday, Aug. 17, in a Thursday press release. During this period, individuals will not pay the state’s 6 percent sales tax on clothing and shoes under $100. Those buying backpacks will be exempt on the state’s sales tax for the first $40 of their purchase.
“Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week is a great time for shoppers to save money on essential items and help their budgets stretch further, especially as we continue to grapple with rising prices and consumers feel like they are paying more for less,” Lierman said.
